B. Moon Kim received his B.S. and M.S. (organic chemistry) from the Department of Chemistry, Seoul National University. After a brief military training, he moved to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in organic chemistry in the laboratory of the late Prof. S. Masamune. He then joined Prof. K. B. Sharpless’ group as a postdoctoral fellow. After his postdoctoral work, he took a Senior Research Chemist position and later a Research Fellow at the Medicinal Chemistry Department of the Merck Research Laboratory, West Point, Pennsylvania. After 5 year experience as a medicinal chemist in HIV protease inhibitor development, he moved back to his alma mater as an Assistant Professor. At SNU, he served as Chemistry Department Chair and Director of BK21 Division of Chemistry & Molecular Engineering. Later he also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs of the university. He also spent one and a half year at the National Institute of Health as a guest researcher. His research is focused on: 1) the development of potent NS5A inhibitors, bacteria quorum sensing inhibitors, and selective antagonists for corticotropin releasing hormone receptor-1 in the medicinal chemistry field and 2) the development of efficient synthetic organic transformations including the employment of transition metal alloy nanoparticle catalysts.
